Opportunity

Watched the World Series

The team I root for

Didn’t win

They’re from my hometown

Some of my earliest memories

Are of the family

Gathering around the tv

And watching Fernando

You know

Valenzuela

Fernandomania

They called it

My parents

Who I found out later

Didn’t like the sport

So much as

To see someone

Who looked like them

And shared nationality

And wanted us to see

And dream

That could be us

On tv

Or at least

That we too could succeed

In this country

    1. Haha…thanks David! I played baseball as a kid but wasn’t a power hitter, so at least I’m hitting home runs in poetry. And as far as the team losing, it would have been a nice celebration for the city but as you know, in sports, there is only one winner in the end.
